An experienced sound engineer will select and correctly place the best microphone for each instrument / vocal channel. Appropriate inline effects (reverb, compression, etc.) and equipment (DI, pop-screen, baffle, etc.) will be applied. Input levels will be adjusted and verified. Appropriate listen / playback equipment (headphones/live) will be assigned and enabled.

MJB Studios provides 16 dedicated live recording channels to manage all instruments capably. In addition, 20 more live channels are available for inputs that can be mixed down to stereo. Hundreds of channels of recording capacity allow for complex overdubs and layering. Separate soundproof booth spaces are available for live drum recording or critical tracks (e.g. flute, violin). Live listen back is available via headphones or monitors.

Careful mixing of recorded tracks sets matching levels to create an end result with the style and sound quality desired. Stereo panning is used to create spacial presence. During mix-down, low level tracks can be enhanced. Small 'fixes' can be applied using cut / paste techniques. Fuller sound can be created by doubling tracks and panning separately. Dynamics adjustments such as fade in / out, or highlighting solos are applied.

Mastering is the art of creating the best sonic experience from the final mix-down. Software plug-in tools such as multiband-compression and parametric equalization are used to enhance and bring out every nuance of the music. This can result in improvements ranging from subtle to "WOW!!!". Finally a process called Normalization is used to guarantee the tunes sound just as great when played on your home stereo as on your MP3 player while you're working out.
